DBPTK

Database Preservation Toolkit

The Database Preservation Toolkit, better known as DBPTK, is a tool that allows technicians to export data from relational databases to standardized formats with the aim of preserving them for long periods of time, regardless of the database management system used.

The tool has modules that enable the extraction and import of data from different database management systems, such as Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, among others. DBPTK is able to convert data into file formats more suited for long-term preservation, such as the SIARD format.

DBPTK also includes a set of tools for validating and presenting archived data to end users.

Why do we need to preserve relational databases?

Relational databases are one of the main technologies that support the information systems in today’s organizations. They are designed to store, organize, and retrieve digital information, and they are such a fundamental part of information systems that without them, these systems would not be able to function.

Very often, the information contained in databases is irreplaceable or prohibitively expensive to reacquire, so measures must be taken to ensure that the information in the databases is preserved.

It is common for governments to have databases with invaluable information, such as information about taxes, social security contributions, judicial information, clinical records, etc. This information is crucial to maintaining the rights, and duties of citizens.

This information is valuable and should be kept authentic and accessible over several decades. The DBPTK is a tool that allows archiving these information records very efficiently, enabling organizations to comply with  legislation on archival information management without incurring in high costs.
