DSpace is an open-source software that enables the implementation of an institutional repository.

Institutional repositories are information management systems used to store, preserve and disseminate the intellectual output of an institution.

Such repositories contribute to an increase of impact of scientific research, enhancing publications’ visibility and accessibility, as well as facilitating the management of an institution’s intellectual memory.

DSpace is the software of choice for academic, non-profit and commercial organizations building open digital repositories. It has no licensing costs and can be completely customized to fit the needs of any organization.

DSpace preserves and enables easy access to all types of digital content including text, images, moving images, data sets and more. With an ever-growing community of developers, committed to continuously expanding and improving the software, each DSpace installation benefits from the next.

No licensing costs

DSpace is an open-source solution developed by HP in collaboration with MIT. This is free software, without any licensing costs that can manage information in any digital format (e.g. text documents, audio, video, spreadsheets, data sets, etc.).

Widespread

DSpace is implemented in over 700 institutions around the world. It is predominantly used by university libraries to preserve, disseminate and promote their scientific output. There are, however, many institutions that use DSpace for other purposes, such as a repository of scientific data, photos, museum collections, repository of newspapers, e-learning materials, etc.

Highly configurable

DSpace is highly configurable, making it possible to always meet the needs of a client institution. Among other things, this solution enables full customization of its graphical user interface, the definition of metadata elements, configuration of deposit workflows, internationalization, etc.

Customizable ingest workflow

The ingest workflow included in DSpace may be configurable to meet client’s expectations. A collection’s workflow can have up to three steps. Each collection may have an associated group for performing each step. If a collection has no groups associated with any step, submissions to that collection are published immediately by the main archive.

Reporting and statistics

Making use of statistics add-on developed by the University of Minho, DSpace can display detailed information about the queries and downloads of each document. The statistics are organized in multiple dimensions and can be accessed by author, document, collection or community, top downloads, top authors, etc.

Additional Add-ons

DSpace instances managed by KEEP SOLUTIONS are enriched with custom developed DSpace add-ons that enhance users experience. Such add-ons include a Web 2.0 sharing bar, an ingest controlled vocabulary for European FP7 projects (auto-updatable), OAI-PMH record filtering and transformation services for DRIVER compliance, enhanced statistics, most recent items visible at the front page, request-a-copy add-on, and more.

Branding & design

This service encompasses the development of a design proposal to adapt the software to the graphical identity of the client institution. It also includes all the necessary work to implement the approved design in the software.

Installation & configuration

This service includes the analysis of requirements from the client, and the correct installation and configuration of the whole system in the production site, this being at the client location or in the cloud.

Training

Training course for users of the product. The training will be given at the client’s location. Certificates of presence will be handed to every participant.

Data migration

This service entails the extraction, transformation and transference of data from legacy systems to the newly implemented system. Our data migration service follows a well-established methodology that ensures predictability and the success of the migration process.

Maintenance & support

This service encompasses the diagnosis and resolution of problems, user support, and changes to the system’s settings in order to cope with modifications in its execution environment. This process is in accordance with ISO 27001 – Information Security Management System.

Feature development

This service consists of the analysis and development of new software features in order to cope with additional client requirements, e.g. development of modules to interoperate with existing systems in the organisation.
